FLOWERS IN MEXICO.
Natives Inherit Their Love of Them from a Long Line of Ancestors. As a people the Mexican, are very fond of flowers; and every village, town and city has its place where flowers are sold, and many of the larger places have extensive flower markets. Often the flowers brought to the market are wild specimens found in the woods and the fields, but all are beautiful. In many of the smaller towns and villages the public parks and the sidewalks of the streets are used as places for tne sale of flowers. Everywhere they may be bought at surprisingly low prices. So plentiful are flowers, they are used for great public decorations. Sometimes whole parks and the , rents of buildings for many streets are covered with floral decorations on a feast day. The Mexican love of flowers has been Inherited from aT long line of flower-loving ancestors. More than a thousand years ago the chief feature of worship among the Toltecs was the great floral offering which was made to the fair god once a year, and which lasted for a whole Mexican week. During this festival one of the features was a great floral procession, which traversed the principal streets of the city to the sound of musical instruments. Everyone in the procession carried flowers to lay upon the altar of the god or to place upon the steps or walls of His temple. In this procession were princes, nobles, priests and commoners. This floral festival was an expression of the love of nature for which the Toltecs were noted. Until they came into contact with the Aztecs later on in history they were purely nature worshipers, and flowers and fruits formed the chief part of their offerings. So the Mexican comes by his love of flowers honestly.

A Curious Prayer.
In the State of Ohio there resided \a family consisting of an old man by the name of Bearer and his three sons, all of whom were hard "pets, ’ who had often laughed to scorn the advice and/'entreaties of a pious though very eccentric minister who resided in the same tSwn. It happened one of the boys was bitten by a rattlesnake and was expected to die, when the minister was sent for in great haste. On his arlval he found the young man very penitent and anxious to be prayed with. The minister, calling on the family, kneeled down and prayed in this wise: “Oh, Lord, we thank thee for rattlesnakes; we thank thee because a rattlesnake has bitten Jim. We pray thee send a rattlesnake to bite John; send one to bite Bill; and, oh, Lord, send the biggest kind of a rattlesnake to bite the old man, for nothing but rattlesnakes will ever bring the Beaver family to repentance!’’

The Word Picnic.
I’he derivation of the word picnic is uncertain. In London Notes and Queries of 1853 attempts were made to trace its origin. One correspondent says: “Under a French form the word appears in a speech of Robespierre, ‘C’est lei kqu’il doit m’accuser, et non dans les plquesniques.’ An earlier Instance occurs in one of Lord Chesterfield s letters, dated October, 1748.” Another-writer of the same tries to trace the word from FraHß into Italy. Starting with the assußH tlon that piquenique in French InqflH a partv nt which each guest prov®|| some particular dish or performs sSh special duty, he finds the Italian HI pressions nlcchla (duty) and piccokHß trifling service), and from these HB coins piccola nlcchla (picnic). A French encyclopedia, 1843, haH| that the word Is compounded of IB simple English pick (to choose) BH nick (in the nick of time, on the of the moment). In Franco the Is also used for Indoor picnics.
