The True Friend of The Filipino
The issue between the two parties on the Philippine question is clear cut and easy to understand. Tbe Democrats wculd have the Ad- inis, tration haul down the flag, ship back the school teachers, withdraw the judges, and all the mac! inery of government and leave the islands !o th?mselves, .regardless of whether they progress or go to the dogs. The policy of she Republican party is different —mindful of the bloody history of all ether Spanish colonies, convinc d of the fact that t’.e Filipinos are not yet capable of self-government, the party is pledged to carry out the lofty ideas expressed by McKinley. The ins - lar governaent is developing the resources of the islands, aduruistering justice, civilizing, educating and gradually extending the ilective franchise’, an? inviting an increasing number of Filipinos to share in the burden of government. The chief criticism that ether powers axperien. ced in colonial administration has made regarding our Philipii e policy i.a that we have been too hasty in giving so much to the natives, In short the Democratic party advocates that which would result in revo'ution, the Republicans are bringing about an evolution whose benifioent influence will be felt throughout the Orient. Their policy would not stand the test of experience, nor would they dare to put it in practise had they the power. The Republican policy has already brought forth gcod fruit, though the past has been ODly a lime of reed sowing.
