CITY COUNCIL.
The [City Counoil, at their regular meeting Mondpy night, passed by unanimous vet-, toe ordianoe granting a franchise to the Remington Telephone Company, of whion D . Besser, of that town, is the proprietor of the -system. The franobisa gives him the right to operate fonr toll stations in Rensselaer for 10 years with the necessary privelege of ereotiog poles and wirts. Weston cemetery trustees report sale of a SIOO lot to A. H. Hopkins and a SSO lot to W. E. Moore. Sales were approved. The water oommittee was authorized to oontraot with F. E. Babcock, pnblisber of the Democrat, for water pewer tr operate his presses with. The official bonds for the city officers whose new terms begin September Ist were fixed *t the following amouats: For* Mayor, $3,000; Treasurer, $30,000, Clerk SSOO, Marshal $1,000; Engineer $500; Attorney SSOO.
G. A. Williams was re-eleoted oity attorney; and H. L. Gamble re-eleoted oity engineer. For oity health officer. Dr. A. J- Miller wss eleoted. He will be "the only Democrat on the oity official force. Superintendent Chamberlain was authoris’d to purchase two new aro lights, both to be ereoted on Oak street north erf the depot; one at tbe crossing of Franklin, the other at tbe crossing of Plum street.
Tbe water oommittee was ordered to have certain leaking hydrants pat in good repair. The ordinance for the sidewalk on Austin avenue was adopted. Tbe bids for its construction will be received on Sept. 20tb. Leslie Clark and others petitioned for a sewer on .Plnm and Franklin streets Referred to sewer oommittee.
A resolution was passed asking the merchants to sweep and sorape np the dirt in front of their plaoes, whereupon the msTobal will haul it away. A soaroity of funds makes it difficult otherwise to kee,) the streets as oleau as they should be.
