Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 36, Number 95, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 22 July 1904 — Gen. Niles Heard From. [ARTICLE]
Gen. Niles Heard From.
The publishing in Wednesday evening’s Republican the fact that Gen. E. R. Niles had escaped from Long Cliff insane asylum has brought out the fact that he spent Sunday _July 10th in Jasper county, and which must have been very soon -after he escaped. On the Saturday evening he * appeared at the home of W. S. Russell, in Carpenter Tp, west of Remington, and asked for entertainment. He being an old soldier and Mr. Russell being one also, he very readily took him in, and kept him until Monday morning, when he left going west towards Goodland and saying he was going to Chicago.
He spent Sunday washing and and ironing his clothes, and talked freely about himself. He told his name correctly and Mr. Russell’s people also saw his name on his clothing, They got the idea that he had been in some kind of hospital or institution, and had been discharged, not supposing however that he was an escaped lunatic. We learn these facts from Dr. S. O. Johnson, Mr/ Russell’s son-in-law, and whose children were at Mr. Russell’s at the time. The doctor has written to the asylum authorities, telling them of the facts above given.
