The Downfall of Pride.
If you want to keep on being friendly with a certain charming but slightly absent minded Washington woman I advise yon not to say one word to her about her new tailor made suit, says the Washington Post. It came home not long before Christmas, and she decided to wear it on a shopping expedition the very next day. A dozen things happened to delay her while she was dressing, and in the end she was forced to rush out hurriedly to keep an appointment at the dentist’s. Everybody turned to stare at her as she parsed. This flattering recognition of the smart cut of- her new three-quarters length coat was gratifying in '/he extreme. She tripped along well satisfied with herself and her tailor, but modestly bent on looking perfectly unconscious of the attention she was attracting. She came to a crossing where the pavement was not as clean as it usually is. The street was 7th street, and crowded. She dropped her hand to pick up her trim skirt. The next moment the absent-minded lady with a cry of horrbr was flying down a side street. She had come out to shop in a new coat and a plaid silk petticoat. The skirt of her new suit was in her Avardrobe at home. i
