"Lenonanie” Again.
James Whitcomb Riley’s poem >f “Lenonanie,” the history of ffhicb is pretty well-known, is up lor discussion again. An exchange says of it: "It was accepted by all the prominent critics but one as a genuine poem. The one exception was Edmund Clarence Stedman, who discovered the forgery at onoe and denounced it as suoh in a New York newspaper. The truth finally came out, and Mr. Riley lost his position on The Anderson Democrat. ’No paper would ever print my explanation of the affair,’ says Mr. Riley. Thememory of that time still stands out as one of the saddest experience in my life, and one that I can never out live. Even as it is now," there is nothing for me to do but to acknowledge that I wrote it, as I d«"»; but that does not stand, since I once denied being the author. I wrote it, but I did not, 1 did not write it. but I did, and I am a liar any way you put it,’ But Riley proved by that poem that "Tne Poetry Critics” didn’t know what they were talking about —and many of ’em do not even unto this day.
