Editor Griffin Explains.
Remington Press. Attorney J. E. Westfall, whose disappearance we commented on last week, returned to Remington M~nday, very indignant at the citizens in general and the Press editor in particular, for intimating hat bis disappearance simultaneously with a note for SSOO which nad been entrusted to him to deliver to another party, was any ooooern of the public or just grounds for suspicion, and to ease his wouudtd feelings we make haste to proc'aim that he brought back the SSOO note with him and we understand has turned it back to Mrs. Lewis. Now in justification of our remarks of last week a few facts may be of interest to those not, familiar with the circumstances. We were mistaken in saying he “left no intimation as to his destination.’’ as it now developes that he did leave word with a oertain party here that "in case anything developed here concerning him within a few days after be left, to telegraph him at 171 Russell street, Hammond, Ind.” A few days prior to his disappearance he broke up housekeeping, disposed of some of his household goods and stored the balance and informed the editor of this paper that bis motner who had been his housekeeper, had gone to live with her daughters until suoh time as he oonld find a new location. A search of his office disclosed the fact that he had disposed of nearly every book and pieoe of office furnit are except a set of books on which an Indianapolis firm holds a olaim for some $235. Tuesday morning Mis. Mary Lewis oame to our offioe very muoh excited and explained to ns that she bad entrusted Mr. Westfall with a SSOO note and also a oheok for $37.50 bcth of which were to be turned over to Rensseiier parties in payment of claims against her deoeas ed husband’s estate of which she is Administratrix and that she had that morning telephoned the parties at Rensselaer who replied that Mr. Westfall had not been in to seem them or made any settle* ment either with the above SSOO note or its proceeds, and stated to us that she was very muoh afraid i Mr. Westfall had planned to de-j fraud her out of the above amount.! As to to the “tangled condition of bis legal and financial business’’, we will simply say that he has ad-1 ded a few “knots” since his return, and there are still several skeins to be unwound. It pays to trade at Wm. Sohleman’fl.
