The result of the Babcock libel case at Kentland was not a disagreement, as those present at ths trial were generally disposed to expect, but a conviction and a fine. The verdict was guilty and the penalty was a fine of five dollars, and all costa remitted. This last proviso being in accordance with a special clause of the law which permits juries to remit all costs in libel oases if they so desire. The jury at first is said to have stood six to six, which was, as we are now informed, the exact state of their political cleavage, ’and not seven Republicans to five Democrats as we previously stated. But we do not understand that they divided strictly on political lines at their first vote in the jury room. The jury was out only about an hour.
