The New Text Book Contract.
The state board of education has finally awarded tbe contract for furnishing tho t» xt books for reading, arithmetic, geography and copy books to be need in tbe Indiana sohools the next five years, j Most of the money, whioh is approximately $5 000,000, will drop ( into Chicago, as all but one of the suooessful bidders are lor ated in that city. The Oontraot for the readers and primers was given to tbe Indiana School Book company, which forvanoed geography will b 3 furnished by Ginn & Go , and the text will be
Fry’s. This is tbe same as has been in use in th» state. The primary geography will he Carr and MoMurray’s, furnished by McMillan & Co. The Walsh arithmetics were adopUd in place of the Cook and Cropsey and will be furnished by D C. Heath & Co. The Eaton & Co. copy books were adopted. There will be a little change in tbe reader adopted from those now in use, The primer is entirely new, the first and second readers are revised, the third modified and tbe fourth and fifth are unchanged . The primary geography is entirely new and the arithmetics are entirely different than what tbe school men expected to be accepted. The biggest surprises of tbe award were the contracts for tbe arithmetics and the turning down of the proposal made by Bilver, Burdette & Co. It was on tbe oontraot for the arithmetics that the most vigorous fight was made. It was expected that the fight on tbe arithmetics wonld be between Silver, Burdette & Co., and some other publishing house. The board refused to readopt either of the revised books of that firm, preferring the books of D C. Heath.
