Potassium For Gifford’s Swamp Lands
The Farm News department of the Reoord Herald lately published au extensive description of the results of treating peaty soil with potassium, in the form either of potassium ohlorate or potassium sulphate. This kind of laud, after it is reclaimed from the marshes by two or three big orope of ooru, and after that does no good. But according to the experiments of Prof. Hopkins, of the Illinois College of Agriculture, if from 100 to 200 pounds of the potassium per aore are put on every year, the land will continue to raise enormous crops of corn, year after year. Considerable of theblaok swamp laud in the Gifford region is of this peaty nature and it seems to be failing in productiveness after two or three good crops. Mr. Gifford is therefore about to make extensive trials of the potassium treatment this year, having already bought enough for 200 or 300 acres. It is believed that with the aid of this potassium tthese Gifford peat lands will hereafter have Benton oonnty beat dear ont of sight in corn produotiou per acre.
