Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 36, Number 47, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 29 January 1904 — The Farmers Institute. [ARTICLE]

The Farmers Institute.

This Institute was very low in I attendance. One of the principal {reasons was the inclement weather Another was a large stock sale on the last day. Institute work is very much to the interest of the Farmers in general. And the Farmers interests is the interest of all, and what is good for the" farm is good for the town as well It is hoped that next year the date of the Institu'e will be far enough in advance that no Stock Sale will be on that date Havinz the various kinds of soil to contend with it would have paid any Farmer to hear the late State Chemist, Prof Huston on the soil we have here While the ta ks of Mr. Somers of Kokomo and Mrs Ross, of South-

port, were well worth the time spent, for they seem to have much < xperience in their line of talk. Mr. Somers talk on co-operation was well received and perfect practical. Mrs. Ross on the Woman’s need on the Farm was much more so. Mr. Slaughter gave a very good talk of his experience on fruit growing and spraying. He calls it not fright but an insect.

The paper of Mrs B D. Comer was very interesting, perfectly practical and to the point There would not be the common complaint of poor batter and poor prices, if more of the Jasper county women would take a short course in Dairying at Purdue. The corn Scoring and judging is an important one and was well discussed, and is an important one and it is hoped will be remembered by the Farmers in general, and that they will make some special effort to have a tetter showing than last year. And have a Judge that can handle the score card to do our judging and attach a card to each exhibit that each one can see where his corn is perfect and where lacking It i- hnped that next year more home speakers can be secured and we need not ask the State to send us a speaker. But that we can say that we have speakers to send in to other counties. Why should we not? Is it because we have not men of brains that we do not have them, or because we have not men of experience? I say no. My opinion is that it is all on account of our lack of interest in those things we produce. Why not have more pride in what we produce and tell others about it. We will be helped and by that the community will be helped Let us remember our theories and put them to practice and let Jasper county have some products good enough to send to the St. Louis Fair this year Omb Who Was Present.
