The British cruiser Grafton- has returned from a cruise and reports having found the body of Bruno Lehman, the customs officer of the Clallam, off Race Rocks. John Davis <jf Nanaimo made a statement regarding a conversation between Captain Roberts nnd passengers who remonstrated with him for not placing them on the tug Holyoke. Davis said he believed the passengers were kept on -board the steamer to bail, in the effort to save property, declaring that when a dozen passengers waited on th<r rirptnin" and asked why he had not signaled the Holyoke for the purpose of placing the men aboard the steamer the captain replied: "I am running this part of the work. When I see we are in danger I will signal the tugboat to come back. We can get there all right. Theasteamer as good for three hours.” “I said,” coutinued Davis. “Why don't you run up to some rocks?' The captain replied: ‘I am not running the tug; they can take us wherever they like.’ -Well,’ I said, ‘you could have signaled the tugboat and given instructions when the tugboat was alongside.’ The captain in reply stated that he wanted to save the steamer.’’ Davisdeclared the Clallam did not remain afloat twenty minutes after this conversation.

Because death lurked in the kiss of a 3-year-old child three persons arc now battling for their lives at a Chicago Pasteur institute. The child. Harold Latta, died of rabies. He was bitten by a dog at Madrid, lowa, Oct. 28. .Although its grief-stricken parents hurried the little one across the prairies of lowa as soon as they learned the nature of its illness, they were too late. Those infected are: W. V. Latta, the father, who kissed the < liil<l while it was ill, and was bitten ou the hands; Matilda Latta, the mother, whose lips were infected from kissing the boy; Forrest Birdsall. 12 years old, Madrid, lowa, who kissed the child and was ilso bitten by the dog; will probably die.
MICROBE BARS WAY TO GALLOW?. Long-Named Bacillus Stands Between Slayer aqd Hangman. One tiny bacillus with a lohg name has Intervened in Omaha between Henry Foster and the hangman’s noose. The microbe found its way into the wound of Thomas Gentleman of Fremont, whom Foster shot. Death followed as a matter of course, for the bacillus is deadly and is known to science as the “bacillus dip-locapulatus-aerogenes.” The hospital surgeons at Fremont declared that Gentleman had one chance in a thousand of recovery. This chance was eliminated when the microbe appeared. Because of this the county attorney is compelled to withdraw his charge of murder in the first degree.
RESCUES KIGHT WOMEN. New York Elevator Man Risks -His Life During Fire to Save Others. Though blinded and choked by smoke from a fire iu the cellar, Abraham Geber, an elevator man in a Broadway office building, iu New York, ran his car three times from the street to the eighth floor, rescuing eight scrubwomen who had become panic-stricken. As the elevator reached the ground floor for the third time Geber staggered into Broadway. He had been nearly stifled by the smoke and was revived with difficulty. Tire actual money loss was small, the fire being confined to the basement. lowa Mon Kills NV ifp and Self. A. A. Bolks, a farmer of Sioux City, lowa, murdered his wife in a boarding house iu Los Angeles, Cal., by cutting her throat with a pocket knife. He then ended his own life in a similar manner. The deed was committed in the presence of their 4-ycar-old son. Bolks was supposed to be temporarily deranged over religious matters. I . •
Freed of Murder Charge. The series of trials to fix the responsibility for the murder in October last of s[abel Bechtel, the pretty 21-year-old silk mill girl of Allentown. Pa., was begun before Judge Trexler in the Lehigh County Court. David Weisenberger, one of the accused men. was formally arraigned and acquitted of the' murder charge. ..

Five men engaged in the struggle with Stechinati, who was roughly handled, but in spite of their efforts he was fourth Io enter the land office and make ci:yy. His application, however, was rejected for the reason that he did not have his citizenship papers with him. TAKE CREW FROM WRECK, Good Work Done Near Lewes, Del., Where British Bark Fou-idered. The.Tife saving crews from Rehobofh and Ilenlopep, Del., after a hard battle with the storm, rescued thirty-three persons from the foundered British bark Comlietsank. A life line was shot out to the stranded vessel and the work of saving the crew with the breeches buoy coimnqnced. Six of the vessel’s crews risked their lives and came ashore in the ship’s boat. The boat capsized when it got in the su rr, aml except for the heroism of the l : fe savers, who rushed into the surf and hauled them they would have drowned. The life savers landed in the brnoclion buoy twenty-snr of the crew and one woman, the captain’s wife, making a total of thirty-three saved. The Comlietsank is from Delagoa Bay, East Africa, for Delaware Breakwater, and had been spoken off the Delaware capes. Several tugs had been searching for the boat, but without success.
BID DOOMED MAN GOOD-BY. John Robinson, Executed nt Kirksville, Mo., Shakes Hands with 500, A special from Kirksville, Mo., says: John Robinson was hanged the other day for the murder of his father-in-law, George Conkle. He died declaring ho had made his peace with God and had been fprgiven for the murder. At his request he was allowed to shake the hands of 500 friends, who came to say good-by in the offices of the jail. When the line hail passed he was led back to his cell. He passed part of the pight in prayer, then lay down and slept calmly until awakened for the journey to the gallows.
WED THIS YEAR OR PAY A TAX. Mayor of Kansas Town Serves Ultinintu ii on Bachelors. Mayor Wyncoop of Severance, Kan., has proclaimed that all bachelors of that town who do not take advantage of leap >ear hereafter must pay a tax. A man who will not marry when he has a chance, he says, is not much of a citizen, and should pay for the questionable privilege of bachelorhood. Judge Mitchell of Douglas County offers to perform free all marriage'eefemdnies of couples where it was necessary for the woman to make the proposal of marriage.
Bank Cashier Kills Himself. Gilley F. Utterback, cashier of the Keokuk County (Iowa) Savings Bank, committed suicide by shooting himself through the temple. It is believed Utterback’s motive for self-destruction was ill health. The bank is alleged to be con.-idei-ably embarrassed by overloaning ffis'funds, but is said to be perfectly solvent.
Reduces Wages of Employes. A 10 per cent reduction has been made in the wages of the American Utir nnd Foundry Company employes in St. Louis, ami the salaries of all officials have also been cut. About 5.000 men are affected. General Manager W. J. Mcßride says will be only temporary. -
Chambermaid Weds Rich Man. Miss Jean O’Neill, chambermaid in n Salt Lake City hotel, became the bride of John Oldham, a millionaire mine owner. The marriage is the culmination of a romance that had its inception in the Salt Lake City hostelry ton days before. Oidhdui is 70 years old.
Former Governor of Ohio Dies. Former Governor Asa S. Bushnell of Ohio died in Columbus. He suffered two strokes of apoplexy while there to attend the inauguration of Gov. Herrick, nnd for several days hovered between life aad death.
Will Send Troops to Pnnnmn. Reports received by 'the United States naval authorities in Colon lend them to believe that Colohibia is determined to semi an army to attack Panama. Colombians troops at Tituinnti number 4,000.
* Three Men Drowned Through Ice. Three mon. believed to be iniqent. were drowned while crossing the Monongahela river in Charleroi, Pa., on the ice. Two others fell into the water, but aucceeded in reaching shore.

DECIDE TO DIE TOGETHER. Amateur Athlete nnd His Wife As Phyxiated in New York Hotel. As a result of a death pact Louis IJolinlofink, the Amateur Athletic Union clianipion runner, smothered his 19-year-old wife Mabel in a room at the Boulevard Hotel, New York, and then killed himself by turning on the gas. Thei? bodies were found in the room the next morning. There was no indication of a struggle. Rambling letters written by Bohnlolink and found on a table indicated that the couple had made a death pact. Buiuxloauk w rot e th tt t- his mother--in-law had caused him and his wife to end their lives. Mrs. Bohnlofink was fully dressed when found dead. But her husband had taken off his coat. Her mouth and nostrils were stuffed with cotton and her head was bound in a blanket. There were no marks of .violence on her nnd her features were composed. After it appeared, turned on the gas and sat down and wrote the letter -explaining their wish., to die. The man's last words were written on many scraps of paper. In these lie said his mother-in-law had enticed his wife from him because she wanted her-daugh-ter to marry another. He says he could not earn enough to support p family of seven and fell into arrears with the insurance company for which he had been working and he- finally became penniless.
$3,030,000 TO FIGHT BEEF TRUST. Live Stock Men Decide to Build Chain of Packing Plants. Live stock men in Portland, Oregon, threw down the gauntlet to the "beef trust.” By unanimous vote the convention of the National Live Stock Association decided to organize a corporation with $5,000,000 capital for the purpose of building independent packing houses. Of this amount $250,000 already is pledged and the remainder will be raised immediately. C. E. Adams of Nebraska thus .stoo<L_tlie-earntist- chanrpiqjt of -independence from the. "beef trust.” He declared the live stock interests of the country were being harnessd and delivered at the door* of the meat trust,—andadvocated co-operation of those interested and competition with the trust as a remedy.
, SEX REVEALED BY DEATH. Woman Rode Over Ranches as Cowboy for Twenty-five Years. A remarkable case of a woman masquerading as a man has been discovered at Rockville, in the western part of Idaho. A few days ago Joe Mouoglian, a well-known cowboy, died suddenly on Succor Creek, in Oregon. When the body was being prepared for burial it was found the decedent was a woman. She had ridden 'the ranges of eastern Oregon for twenty-five years and was well known for a faithful, untiring cowboy. The woman was an expert shot with revolver and rifle. Her home was in a dug-out near Rockville. She was about 54 years old and was popular among all who knew her. She had served on juries and voted at al] elections.
Fears Operation; Ends Life. George Storm, a tobacco grower and president of the Owl Commercial Com-, pany, put an end to his life with a revolver shot while seated at his desk in the company’s office in New York. Relatives and associates ascribe as the eause of the act despondency at the prospect of an operation for appendicitis, of which he stood in great dread.
Venezulean Decision to Be Announced. Senator Pierantoni, Italian counsel in the Venezuelan arbitration case at The Hague, has received an invitation, in the name of M. Muravieff, the Russian minister of justice and president of the arbitration court, to be at The Hague Feb. 26 and the day following, when the tribunal will deliver its decision.
Three Die in Burning Home. Mrs. Elizabeth Wardlee, aged 45 years, and two daughters, Edith, aged 11, and Bessie, aged 7, were burned to death in their home about seven miles north of Terre Ilaiite, Ind. The charred bodies were found in the ruins of the house. It is supposed the building caught fire from an overheated stove.
Orders Strike of Miners. The Pittkburg division of the United Coal Mine Workers has inaugurated a strike in the Leesburg mines of the United States Steel Corporation in Butler .County. The company is alleged to have proken its agreement to pay 56 cents a t<\ and is paying but 45.' (Turkish Magazine Blown Up. Turkish powder magazine in the Kumauova district, sixteen miles from Uskub, Macedonia, has been blown up by Bulgarians. 'Thirty Turks were killed. A sharp engagement is reported to have taken place near Demirhissar, fortyjfive miles fyom Salonica. Ktw Theater Swept by Fire. Twelve hours before the New Normandie Theater in Calgary, N. W. T., was to open its doors for the dedicatory performance fire laid it in ruins. With it sixMlarge stores were destroyed, nnd practically tJie whole block was ruined. The loss is estimated at $280,000. '
Negro Mob Lynches a Negro. Information hns been received of the lynching in Sussex County, Virginia, of n negro mimed Elmore Moseley by a mob of negroes. Moseley was tried for killing another negro in the public highway in the presence of the victim's wife and child. He was acquitted.
