Jasper’s Early History. NORTH WEST
The loca’ jeal mates of "the free and Independent States stood in the way of "A morw perfect Union” [1783 to 1787). The political power to admit Vermont was denied (1777). The Nor:h West was the the first territory and tiie ordinance of 1787 the first scheme for territorial government. Neither Vermont (1791) nor Maine (1830) was ever a territory. The constitutional convention and the congress of 1787 had each a working majority of Inperialists. In the west organized territories followed the constitution (1689) towit Kentucky (1790) which become a state in 1792. Tennessee 1794 made a state in 1796 ; Mississippi. 1817 and Alabama, 1818. The North West in due time was made into six States each passing through the territorial preparation, Ohio, 1803, Indiana 1816, Illinois 1818, Michigan, 1887, Wisconsin, 1848 and Minnesota, 1858. The capital of our provinces of France. 1717 to 1763, Britain, 17K3 to 1783: inter state, 1783 to 1787,'Federal 1787 to 1800 and, of Illinois territory 1705 to 1718 was a noted place in its day. The state G >v-rnor welcomed Lafayette in 1824. From his speech no'e this "when, sir, the power of England has waned to nothing, when the children of today have been fathered to their fathers, Kaskaaki the commercial queen of the we.-t will still remember aid honor your name, At that very time S earn navigation and thQ. subsidence of our trades was robbing eaid queen and soon then after the River buried her in Gulf. The period 1787 to 1800) we now speak of how the nations power exerted to send .the Indians after the Buffalo. Those settlers who fought were giving place to those who bought their way to the west. It was General Putman of Massachusetts who made the first settlement of amerioans at Marrietta Obio(1788) on land purchased from the nation In fifteen years Ohio was a state and there were 4775 white parsons in what is now Indiana. The scalp hunting Indian as well as the leading white hunters, trappers and traders moved after the elk and buffalo into Louisiana. The tide of free holders and house builders was sweeping across Ohio into what is now our state. The slaves at the French posts were freed by the ordinance of 1787 which was our Supreme law unti 1815. The North- West was required by the ordinance to be Loyal to the Union. It supplied leaders and sentiment to save the Union and make freedom universal. The heirs of the corn and vension fed frontier men in East Tennessee and Kentucky proved to be patriotic even against local influences. The last buffalo slain by white men in what is now Jasper oounty was more than one hundred years before this period (1779). The nearest battle between whites and Indians was on the Wabash river. The early pioneers and frontiers men moved ta/i newer country as neighbors Fame too close It was a habit. The study of our locality has reached May 7. 1800 no whites have yet been nearer than the Wabash nv»r. • * 8. P. Thompson. Jan. 20,1903.
