The Doctor’s Last Hours.
Regarding the details of Dr. Washburn’s death more exact details are available than when our our first aooount was published. When he left for Hammond. Tuesday morning, it was with the intention of having an operation; but he supposed, it would be of a comparatively trifling character, to to relieve the abscess, and that he would be able to return, home that Sr me evening. But the operation however proved extensive and severe, and involved the bpening of the abdomenal cavity. The surgical forceps; left there at au operation in Jan, 1902, at the Presbyterian hospital, Chioago, and which were the oause of his death, were back of the liver and still attached to an artery in that organ. They were iron and steel and originally copper plated and niokel outside the copper- The nickel and copper had both oorroded away, and the ''iron and steel were also badly Uiorroded. Of course this substance from the corroded forceps bad permeated and poisioned his system. The operation, as stated, was performed Thursday morning. The daughter Mary oame from Chicago a few hours later. He was bright and oheerful all day Thursday, but during most of Friday be was in a semi-oousoious condition. He knew of the finding of the forceps, and iu speaking about them he exonerated the surgeon Dr. Fenger, from responsibility of leaving them, it being in such oases the duty of the attendants to know that all the surgical implements used are accounted for, before the operation wound is closed.
A little before seven Friday evening Mary left her fathers’s side and went down stairs for a little rest, but in a very few minutes she was recalled by Dr. Loring and held her father’s head as he past quietly away. Be gave her a look of seeming recognition, | but otherwise made no sign that he knew the hand of death was upon him. * *’* r T ' 1 ' Don’t pay oflierl lfc-and 120 a paokage for. coffee when you cfm buy Lion, '4-X, Golden Bantos, Arnuokles, Climax and Javanese for 10c, At John Eger’s.
