It is said that one of the most inveterate writers out of speeches was the late Lord Derby, of whom the story went that the manuscript of one of his most statesmanlike discourses, being picked up from the floor, where it had fallen, was found not only to be freely sprinkled with “Hear, hear!” “Laughter,” and “Applause,” but also to contain a passage beginning, “But I am detaining you too long [cries of ‘No, no!’ and ‘Go on!’J.”
