Exposed to Hydrophobia.
Edward Pattee Going to a Pastuer
Institute.
Edward Pattee, a former well known resident of Rensselaer, now living 7 or 8 miles southeast, has gone to a Pastuer institute at Chicago to take the preventive treatment for hydrophobia. On Sunday Mr. Pattee, whose is something of a horse doctor, was called npon to treat a sick mare for a neighbor, W. V. Stover. Ed thought the mare had kidney trouble and worked with her considerable,' but the animal soon became raging crazy, and Ed con eluded she had hydrophobia, and Dr. Kannal was sent for. He at once said it was hydrophobia and by his advice she was shot, at ID o’clock Sunday night. Bhe would thrash about in her stall, bite at everything, including her own shadow from lanterns, and bite and tear her own flanks and legs. Mr. Pattee, in working with her before he suspected hydrophobia, got the froth from her month, and substances from other parts on his hands, and as he has several small bat fresh cuts and bruises on them, he is justly in fear of the contagion himself; and by the advice of the Rensselaer doctors, will go to a Pastuer institute, for treat ment.
The mare was bitten by a strange dog that came through that region last April. The same dog bit another dog, which soon died. It also attacked Mr. Stover’s son, but bit only his clothing. Dr. English cauterized the sores on his hands Monday morning. The doctor does not think the danger of hydrophobia very great but advise the Pastuer treatment, to be safe.
