The New Methodist Minister
L. Kiudig, A. M. B. D., the new pastor of Rensselaer M. E. church was born near Eaton Ohio. His boyhood and youth was spent on a farm in lowa with an uncle having lost his mother when but
eight years of ago. [£He was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal obnrobfat the age of fifteen. Feeling deeply impressed with a call to the ministry he saved np his scant earnings, and in the fall of 1879 he entered the preparatory department of the Northern nniversity, at Evanston, 111. Persistent determination and tireless industry, enabled him to work his way through that institution, spending three years in the preparatory, four in the university and two in theological sohool, graduating from the university in 1886 with the degree of B. A., and from the Theological in 1888 with the degree of B. D. During his senior year in the university he was' president of his class and took the Deering essav prize, by reason of whioh he’waa'admittfcd to the Kirk oratorioal contest, one of the obief honors of the nniversity. During five years of his college life he was a member of the Student Crew of the United States Life Saving service, and many are the thrilling experiences he is able to recount. During the two years while in the Theologioal seminary be served the South Bend oironit, receiving more than 100 people into the church and building a new church on the oharge. In 1889 the Northwestern university conferred on him the degree of Master of Arts, Oct. 23,1888, he waa married to Miss , Avaline Hull, the daughter of Rev. John H. Hull, one of the oldest members of the Northwest Indiana conference. Waveland, Covington, Lebanon, Valparaiso. Brazil and Michigan City and West Lafayette are the charges he has served since entering the ministry. During his four years’ pastorate at Lebanon more than 350 persons were received into the church. Rev. Kindig has been an ardent Epworth Leaguer from the beginning. He has served the organization as district president, conference secretary and conference treasurer and vice-pre-sident of the Seventh General Conference district. His cultured and charming wife adds no small degree to the efficiency of his ministry. Two daughters, Avaline aged 13 and Geraldine, aged 11 years, brighten their homes and cheer their lives.
