Tells Story On Calkins.
A delegation of Indiana editors was making a trip so Pnt-in-bay and an Indianapolis correspondent who was with the party send|i his paper an interesting letter oonoerning some of the stories told by the editors, One paragraph is of general interest as it conoerns the late Major Calkins. * The correspondent writes: “Yon remember,” said another talker, “Major Calkins, who was defeated for governor by Isaac P. Gray. I reoall the brief speech he made at Laporte when President and Mrs. Hayes entered the state on their tonr. The major was to introduce the diatiugushed guests to his fellow oitizens. He and the Qommittee had put themselves in a good humor for the oocassion by a modest attention to the mellowing influences of ohampagne. *1 have, my fellow-citizens,’ said the major, ‘the distinguished honor and the pleasure of introducing to you Rutherford B. Hayes, president of the United States—(hoorah, from The crowd) — and Mrs. Hayes, the better man of the Two.’~~ “ Mrs. Hayes’s eyes snapped fire as she plainly showed that she was displeased, as she had a right to be. The major didn’t get anything under that administration,”
