Claimed to Be a Revenue Officer.
A fellow whose name w&s probably James McLain, and residence New Albany, though his companions called him Pete something or other, was run in yesterday afternoon by Sheriff Hardy. He was pretty well bowled up, and made himself a nuisance at Strick’s saloon and Tanners’s short order restinrant and was put out at both places. The sheriff first started him out of tiwn bat he slipped back, aud then having heard of some suspicions actions, the dheriff took him in. He had it seems, br-en to several banks asking what the oat-h value would be of certain
notes for large sums, signed by various well known citizens, such as Nelse and Charley Handle, and others, who had nev#r heard of him. At Tanner’s place he olaimed to b 9 a revenue officer and a detective, and insisted on locking through Billy’s pickle bottles for evidence that he was selling the rod-eyed stuff. The Sheriff held him until 9 o’clock next morning, and then let him go, with a plain order to get out of town, which he seems t) have done, and whioh was the best thing to do with him, as he had no money to pay fines with.
