A finely mounted tarpon, tr silver king, fish is now on exhibition st Long’s drag store. It was caught by Delos Thompson, in April, off the Texas coast from the town of Tarpon. The fish weighed 160 pounds and is 6 feet 8 inch* s long. He was caught by hook and line, and it took one hour and 80 minutes to land him. Theie were three in the party and together they caught 21 of these big and wonderfully gamey fish, four of which were saved for mounting and the others turned loose again. It is the unwritten law down there that all tarpons caught are turned loose again exoept those that were wanted for mounting as specimens. Before turning them loose it is the custom to put a small metal tag on the fishes’ front fins, ffith "date of capture and name of captor. Thus tarpons are sometimes caught there with one or more previous tsge on them. The jaws and back bone of a shark, also the property of Mr. Thompson, are also on exhibition at the same plaqp. This fellow was caoght by the party and their boatmen, by hook and line, and weighed 600 pounds, and is said to have been a mpn-eater by birth and breeding, Each jaw is provided with several rows of sharp teeth, which, according to the latest and most approved design in shark's teeth, can be erected or laid down flat at the pleasure, or displeasure, of the owner.
Various.people who took occasion to look in at the doox of our only surviving saloon, Geo. Strickfaden’s place, Saturday, desoribe the activity that prevailed there all day as something astonishing. Twelve experienced bir-keepers stood behind the counter and for 16 hours handed cut the foaming beer to a never diminishing crowd, whioh'filled the room nntil their feet stuck out at every door. Promptly at 11 o’clook however, Strick said the crowd must git and the shop must shut, and git they did and shut it was. Strick isn’t telling anybody how much money he took in during the day, but if anyone hears of him looking around for a chanoe to buy a railroad or to establish a big bank, with the proceeds of his circus day sales, they need not be surprised.
