Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 35, Number 89, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 14 July 1903 — The Hanging Grove Gravel Road. [ARTICLE]
The Hanging Grove Gravel Road.
The bid for the construction of the Hanging Grove gravel roads filed by W. F. Smith, of Rensselaer, and of whom Delos Thompson is the silent partner, was in the sum of $15,300. The commissioners entered an order that as the bid was not in exact accordance with the specifications, the matter will be taken under advisement until the August term. The specifications require that the road shall be m ide of gravel of the quality of Lafayette or Kickapoo gravel. The bidders claim that the road can not be built for the estimates, if either of those gravels are used, and therefore the bid stipulated that Letter or Ov'erton pits gravel could be used. The delay will give the people of the township time to talk over the situation, and if they favor the acceptance of the bid in August, it will probably be accepted, with possibly some slight modifications, owing to the f&ot that about a mile of the proposed road is already graveled to about half the necessary thiokness.
