HANHA CAN NOW DEVOTE HIM-s SELF TO POLITICS. Ohio Sonator Has Disposed of Hi# Steamship and Street Car Lines,lron Ora Mines and Coal Properties—lnheritance Tax Law Void. Senator Hanna will from now on demote all of his attention to politics. He baa disposed of his business affairs in such a way as to leave himself care free. His steamship lines, his iron ore mines, his coat mined, and last, but not least. Ida street railways have been disposed of so effectually that he equld not only take a two weeks’ vacation but one lasting ten years or more without any thought ns to how they would be conducted during hie absence. In fact, it is stated tiie only tangible property possessed at the present time by the M. A. Hanna Company is the office furniture on the sixth floor of the Perry Paine building in Cleveland, where it has its offices. For a long time the business affairs of Senator Hanna have been a source of great worry to him. It has been his ambition to devote all of liis time to public affairs, * and even though his business enterprises were varied and important, he has yearned for the freedom which would enable him to pursue any given course without regard to the details of a business. UPSETS NEW MINNESOTA LAW. Snpreme Court Says Inheritance Tax Statute la Unconstitutional. The Minnesota Snpreme Court lias de-' dared the inheritance tax law of 1902 Unconstitutional. The court's opinion comes in a case affecting the estate of the late Sol Smith Runsell, the actor. Mr. Bussell's wife, as executor of his estate, applied to Probate Judge Harvey of Minneapolis for the distribution of the residue of the estate to her as sole devisee. The Probate Court refused to do this on the ground that the estate was subject to an inheritance tax of $575.55. The District Court ireued a writ of mandamus on the judge of probate, but the judge of probate appealed. The Supreme Court affirmed the order. The Supreme Court declares the law unconstitutional in its entirety.

McGowan of Northern Pacific Diea at Hi* Post. John E. McGowan, one of the oldest and moot widely known engineers on the finluth division of the Northern Pacific*. was killed by the overturning of his engine, which jumped the track at Dellwood. McGowan gained great renown during the Hinckley forest tire. He was fireman on the train that Engineer James Root pulled through the blaring forest, thus saving over a hundred lives. While Root stood at the lever McGowan stood on the tender, constantly dashing water over the burning locomotive ami its engineer. Fleet to China. The Navy Department has ordered the battleship Wisconsin, the first class cruisers Albany, Cincinnati and Raleigh to the gulf of Peehili. China, to augment Rear Admiral Evans’ squadron. In addition, the armored cruiser New York, the cruiser Marblehead aud the gunboat Bennington, now on summer cruise under command of Rear Admiral Glass, are to join Rear Admiral Evans’ squadron at ofit*. Fatal Explosion in Gan Factory. Eight candidates caught cheating in entrance examination papers at Princeton University have been forever debarred from entering that institution. Raisa in Express Rates. Postal receipts for the year show a deficit of $4,500,000. owing to the development of the rural free delivery system. Harriet Lane Johnston Dead. Mrs. Harriet Lane Johnston, niece of President Buchanan, died at NarragnnMtt Pier. Her remains were taken to Baltimore and buried beside her hustmud and children. Extra Session in Colorado. Gov. Peabody of Colorado has called an exteg session of the Legislature to meet July 20 for the purpose of passing a new general appropriation hill for the support of the State institntions. The bill as passed at the last session was declared illegal by the courts.
