Hurty Was Here
i .yi. h. j. • ■ f-*>' ■* • ~*a Vaccination! Vaccination! Vaccination. I -x. v - A;.^>>vys Tiat and Only That fill Stop Ike Epidemic. No Need To Quarantine the City. f Dr. J. N. Hurty, etate health offioer of ladiana, and as great a am ail p>x Hxp,rt ns the nation as- ' fords, was hern yesterday and personally cxaxiued-m jst of the oases of the disease here. He prjnonno- • ed it smallpox, of coarse, which .fam. howevtgrwM already clwrly established. The fears that'some people had entertained that the Doctor would declare a general quarantine, and especially shot out people from coming or going, were not realized. In fact he scouts at the idea that people can be saved from smallpox by going or not going, any place. He says that here as well as every place else there is only one
t Way to keep from getting smallpox and in country as well a 9 oity. and that one way is by general vaooination The disease will continue in this state until fully 90 p-*r cent of the unvaooinated have it. He says also, that if the disease would continue in its present mild oharaoter here, he would say, let it alone and let the people get protection by having it. But that it will not do. but will inevitably, if left unoheokassume a malignant form and result in innumerable deaths m the most dreadful fornv As it did in Indianapolis, Rookport, Koightstown, and numerous other ptaoes T he named.
The doctor urged most strenuously that the city oounoil for the city, and the oouuty commissioners for the oounty, at once prooure a large supply of vaociue points and extend free vaocination to all who will aooept it. Also that both r bodies adopt orders that all exposed persons, or those snspeot* ed to have been exposed, mast be vaocinated or placed in quarantine. This the law gives them power to do, as oity and county boards of health. These recommendations will, it is understood, be at onoe put into effeot by the aotion of the Counoil, at a speoial meeting held last night, The dootor’s advice to those whose vaooination is more than 5 or 6 years baok, is to have it tried again now. If it works you needed %jf it don’t work, you’re hot hurt imioh. Badly sure arms, from vaooination, he says don’t belong with It, and come from getting dirt or other foreign sobatanoeeJnto the sore. Vaocine points as prepared now, are absolutely pure, and if dirt is kept out, vaooi nation oan hurt no one.
