Pushing Palmer for a Place.
The name of Judge Truman F. Palmer, of Monticello, has beenj mentioned in connection with the office of solicitor of the internal revenue department at Washington. The presept incumbent, A. L. Wisbard, of Indianapolis, has resigned. It is said that Senator Fairbanks has been promised that he will be allowed to make the appointment, while it is claimed -also that Senator Platt, of New York, will be given the privilege. However, J udge Palmer’s friends are doing everything possible to land the plum for him and telegrams have been pouring into Washington from over the state endorsing Judge Palmer. One fact that weakens the judge’s chances is the appointment of Melville Miller, editor of the Lafayette Journal, as assistant secretrary of the interior. Miller and Palmer are both in the same district and two fat jobs in the same district do not often work out. The position proposed for Judge Palmer pays $4,000 per year.
