It Is a Doctor, This Time.
Another Very Dangerous Lunatic Now In Our County Jail. Sheriff Hardy is again the custodian of a very dangerous lunatic and like the one whose marks the sheriff still carries in his face, this one is from Walker tp., and is a large, powerful man. Unlike the former man, however, this one is not a new comer, but has resid* ed in the county many years, and is a man of prominence in his community, and a member of one of the learned professions. This unfortunate victim of a darkened mind is Dr. Cyrus V. Jones of Kniman, and whose insanity was briefly mentioned in Monday's items. Indications of insanity have been noticed for some time, but recently he had become so dangerous and violent that his removal to an insane asylum has become a necessity. Monday afternoon Constable Vick, E. J. Duvall and W. F. Smith went to Kniman to perform the known-to-be dangerous and difficult operation of capturing and bringing to town the unfortunate doctor. They found it as hard a job as they expected, He seemed to be expecting some such attempt and was prepared for it, with 'several big revolvers, and when they tried to enter ips office, he drove them back with a revolver in their.faces, and threats to shoot, which meant business. They then telephoned to the doctor’s two brothers at Medaryville, Dr. Jay Jones, and Harry Jones, a druggist, and they came over to help effect the oapture. On their arrival the insahe man permitted his brothers to come in and talk with him, as he lay in his bed, but would not surrender his weapons. But while the brothers took his attention the other men slipped in behind the bed and all pounced on him. Mr. Duvall got hold of the hand that held the revolver, and
pat hie thumb under the hammer, which was a lucky precaution, for Jones snapped the weapon three times before they got him overpowered and the weapon taken away. Bis brothers bad assured them that the weapon was harm» less, but it was found to be fully loaded, and would shoot like a young cannon. After Jones was overpowered and heavily ironed he was brought to Rensselaer, arriving here about 2:30 a. m. On arriving he was ex* amined for personal effects, as is the duty of the sheriff, and the same placed in safe keeping. Be was legally examined Mon-, day, by Drs. W. O. Sohwier, of Wheatfield, and L. N. Wells and 0. M, Rice, of DeMotte, with Clerk W. B, Robertson, of Wheatfield, as justice of the peace. The examination was performed at long range, out of a wholesome respect for the insane doctor’s shouting irons.
According to th» report made by the insanity commission, the in* sane man is 40 years old, never married, born in Pulaski county, and has red hair; is 6 feet lOinohes high and weighs 200 pounds. In health he was very jovial, but now he is restless, sleepless, silent and melanoholly, He has never, so far as known, been addicted to any excesses nor immorality. He imagined the town was full of electricty and likely to burn up, that coons crawled into his office through the key hole, that he must haul wood to buy groceries for his family (he has none) would not permit a fire in his office because a man sat in his chimneys would not permit his horses to be fed or petered, and other like delusions, He will be ta'en to Long Cliff asylum as soon as (be necessary 101*1X111 CH 11 t? 3 OOCDpiIOC* Wlttl*
