The addition of a new member to the president’s cabinet is always ; an important event. The latest of these new departments, just created, is the Department of Commerce and Labor. The oommon ;; title of the bead of the department will be Secretary of Commerce, George B. Cortelyon, the preei dent’s former private secretary has been nominated and confirmed as the first secretary of the department. He will have a chance to get busy as eoon as he gets his working foroe appointed for a large si number of bureaus heretofore belonging to other departments have been assigned to him.

The Democrats in the state legislature might all go out on a strike and the Republicans still have enough members iu both houses to do business. The seating of W, J, Hamilton if Montgomery) oounty and unseating of Peter Schloot gave the Republicans of the House sixty-seven membefs, whioh is just a quorum. The death of Senator Burns leave the Republicans thirtv-foar members in the Senate, whioh is also just a quorum. There will be no election of a eaooessor to Senator Burns for this session, for before the election could be held the session will be at an end. Just why Sohloot was turned ont and Hamilton turned in we are not informed. No doubt there were good reasons for it, however, aside from the resemblance in sound of Sohloot’s name to that jf the Mormon senator, 8m >ot, of Utah, who is likely to have a pretty rocky road before he gets to ocoupy his seat in the U. 8.
