Fourteen Degrees Below Zero.
The weather here last night and thiß morning was not only the ooldest of the present winter, so far as experienced, but colder than, at any time during the year 1902It was evident all day Monday that Monday night would be a stinger, but few people supposed that it would be the winter’s record breaker, and this morning many could scarce believe their eyes when the thermometer showed the intense degree as the cold. Monday at 5 p. m. the temperature was 8 above. Two hours later it was 5 above, and in another two hours it was 2 above. This rate of fall of 8 degrees every two hours continued practically uniform until 7 o’olook this when the lowest point of 14 below zero was touched. The ooldest weather of the present winter, previous to this, was on Deo. 12tb, when it was 7 below. The last previous time we had as cold weather as this was Deo. 15th, 1901, when 15 below zero was touched. At that time there was a solid week of-zero every night, and some days all day. No snoh prolonged spell of intense oold is looked for now. In faot, while occasional spells of intense oold are not unooommon in the last half of February, protracted oold spells are very unusual because of the better grip the sun has now than earlier in the winter.
