Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 35, Number 40, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 23 January 1903 — The Quail Protection Bill. [ARTICLE]
The Quail Protection Bill.
The bill to suspend the killing of quail for five years in this state is having a rooky road in the state senate, and is encountering all sorts of mistaken and foolish opposition. One senator actually oontended that in five years, if killing them were prohibited quails would beoome so thiok they would be a sonroe of great damage to the farmers. Jnat as if there were a possibility of them ever becoming even as numerous as they ought to be to proteot the farmers orops from inseots. With the little natural shelter left for them now, and the little food they can find daring the and the skunks, crows and ball snakes always on the bant for their eggs, quails will never Again be half numerous enough in this state, if their killing by hunters were permanently prohibited.
