At any rate, no one can claim that the fanning Industry is in the hands of a trust. According to the census of 1900 there are nearly six million separate farms in the country, representing nearly as many owners. These farms cover 841,000,000 acres. 415,000,000 of which consist of improved land. More than half of the people of this country live on taring. The produce of American agriculture in 1899, including farm animal? and other products, aggregated nearly five billion dollars. The most valuable crop was Indian corn, $828,000,090; then hay and forage, 1484,000,000; then cotton, $324,000,000; wheat returned $370,000,000, and oats $217,000,000. The animals sold and slaughtered during the year were valued at over $900,000,000, the products* of the dairy gave $472,000,000, while poultry and eggs returned over $281,0u0,000: These are big figures, and demonstrafe the fact that the present prosperity of the American farmer is something worth letting alone. Ex-President Cleveland longs for the day when the Democracy will be in fighting trim again. So far as the Democratic minority in the house of representatives is concerned, the longing is already realized. The gentlemen put up a vigorous quarrel on tfie resolution appropriating $50,000 to pay the expenses of the anthracite strike commission. But following a precedent pretty well established among Democratic leaders, they did all their fighting among themselves.

Senator Goodwine’s Baby.
Senator Good wine's "baby, whisb was one of the favored visitors on the floor of the aeuate yesterday morning for an hour, was the innocent cause, says the -iounral, of some delightful senatorial repartee. The youngster occupied seat bfvantiigg nn tlie pn tarnal desk r whence it viewed the doings of the lawmakers with the round eyed dignity of infancy and conducted i'self with such decorum as to win the admiration of every one in the chamber. A lull came in the proceedings and Senator Lindley secured recognition for a facetious motion to the effect that the rules of the senate concerning the privileges of the floor be waived so far as babies were concernedThere were several seconds to the motion and then the fond father jumped to his feet with an inspiration. “I mov;,” said Senator Goodwine, “that a baby just like it be placed on the desk of every eenptor.” Whereat the members and the galleries laughed and applauded, while Senators Ogborn and Crumpacker, the confirmed bachelors, blushed violently, and Senator Wolcott topped the situation off With. r — * _ “I rise to a point of order, Mr. President. It will be impossible to carry out the motion of the senator from Warren because there’s no other baby like it in the world. He admits it.” All of which goes to show that even senatorial dignity will bend without breaking

WHAT INDIANA EDITORS ARE SAYING
A v Well-Managed State. Indiana finances are in good shape. State Treasurer Levy’s annual statement shows that the state debt Is now The debt haw been reduced more than one-half during the last few years, one million dollars having been paid recently, and some of the state officers are of the opinion it will be nearly if not quite all paid off during Governor W. T. Durbin’s term. There are also good, balances In the treasury. In the general fund there are $318,946.12 and in the state debt sinking fund $405,561.43 and a sufficient amount in the other funds to aggregate $925,000. With the debts all paid off and the present efficient and economical state administration continued, state taxes can be reduced. —Greenfield Republican.
The People Are Informed.
The time has past when the people depend upon campaign speakers for their political information. There Is scarcely a farmer now but that has his daily paper delivered at his door and he reads and studies questions and conditions at home for himself. The masses of the people are quite as well informed as is the average campaign speaker. As a result the political meetings are not so well attended as they once were, and it requires a man of more than ordinary reputation as a speaker, or a man of particular influence to draw a crowd like the old-time campaign rally. With the present advantages of general infor-mation-continued , it is not likelv that we shall ever again witness the oldtime political enthusiasm and rallies. This does not mean that the people are less Interested or that- they are indifferent, it means that they are depending more upon their own Judgment and information and are not to be Influenced by prejudice or by the cunning representation of political speakers. The daily and weekly newspapers have become the standing army of the party and keep up the battle year in and year out. This is why the spellbinder is losing his charm and his Influence. —Middletown News.
Women and Their Troubles.
Once upon a time two women were talking over their troubles, and while one was telling her tale of woe the other was very impatient to tell hers. * Finally, after several unsuccessful attempts, the second woman managed to tell her story, and as she had the last say she Improved very much on the tale of the first woman, in consequence of which the first speaker was made quite unhappy. Moral. Some women are more wretched than others because the others have more troubles than they have.. —New York Herald.
Mark Twain on Lying.
Why will you humbug yourselves with that foolish notion that no lie Is a lleexcept a spoken one? What is the difference between lying with your eyes and lying with your mouth? There is none, and if you would reflect a moment you would see that it is so. There isn’t a human being that doesn’t tell a gross of lies every day of his life.— Mark Twain in Harper’s.
