Retort Courteous.
When Mark Twain called on Senator Chauncey Depew at his office recently be found him with his fingers much soiled from writing. As the Senator stepped to the bowl and began washing his hands, Mr. Clemens observed laughingly: “It might bo n good thing if you would use a little of that soap on your conscience. Senator.” “Possibly,” agreed the Senator. “Soap would do in my case, but ff ’twas yours, you'd have to use pumice ’♦yne at least.”—New York Times.
