Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 35, Number 30, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 16 December 1902 — Hammond Harbor Bill. [ARTICLE]
Hammond Harbor Bill.
Mayor Kuotte, of Hammond, who has tried to get a harbor at Hammond for so Jong that -he is known as “Harbor” Knotts, says the bill will again be intronced. The object of the bill will be to build a canal from the Calumet river at Hammond to Indiana Harbor, and also to open up at Wolf lake. Mr. Knotts says he expeots great opposition from the Pennsylvania, Lake Shore and Baltimore & Ohio railroads, which would have to put in swinging bridges if the oanal is built.* The real opposition of the railroad, Mr. Knott says, will not be on aooount of the expense of the bridges, but because it will reduce freight rates and bring water transportation directly in competition with the railroads along the Indiana shores.
