Missed Jail By a Neck.
What a Gathering of the Sporties that Would Be. MM Crown Point Register. Sheriff Lawrence received a tip from Shelby Wednesday night that an attempt would be made to pnll off a prize fight there that evening between “Kid” Landis, of Rensselaer and a boxer by the name of “Hennesy” from Frankfort He immediately gathered a posse of deputies and drove down, arriving there in time to find that the principals in the affair had taken alarm and skipped on a freight train- He however found several of the sports and captured the gloves and all the ring paraphernalia. It seems that the crowd had boarded the train at Rensselaer intending to pull off the fight at Thayer but on arriving at that place changed their mind and came ©n to Shelby where they hired Caster’s Hall. They had the ring pitched and everything in readiness for the bout to begin when they became alarmed and instead of proceeding they boarded a south bound frieght. Some of the crowd staid however and were found by Sheriff Lawrence and party on their arrival about 11 o’clock and one of them who had been selected as ring official said that the fight was called off on account of a disagreement over the purse. Whatever the reason, it was a lucky one for the promoters and principals of the fight as Mr. Lawrence went prepared to put the whole crowd under arrest and bring them back with them. The day of prize fighting in Lake County is past and all attempts to revive it will probably meet with failure. Anyway, so long as Sheriff Lawrence and Sheriff elect Daugherty are at the helm.
