Comments on the County Vote.

Elsewhere in this issue is pub lished the fall vote in Jasper county, in tabulated form, on the head of the state ticket, and for all offices on the looal ticket except county councilmen. The total vote oast for secretary of state was 3328, of which 1918 were Republicans, 1310 Demoorats, 88 Prohibitionists, 6 Peoples Party 4 Socialist and 2 Socialist Labor. The total vote in 1900 was 3660, or a falling off this year, of 432. The Republican vote fell off 165 votes, the Democratic 270 and the Prohibitionist 9. The total .vote this year however is 140 more than it was in the last off year election, in 1898. Marion 851 957 Jordan 134 174 Newton 135 152 Keener 164 187 Kankakee 107 131 Wheatfield 224 238 Carpenter 515 587 Milroy 67 80 Union 312 352 Scratching and splitting of tickets prevailed all ever the county, one place about as bad as another, although in Newton township the epidemic approached nearer to cyclonic* violence than any other place. An amusing result of the scratching there was that John Martindale, the head mover of the township' scratching brigade, also got scratched himself in an eminent degree, as candidate for oounty councilman; and his opponent Uncle Bill Baker, of Rensselaer, actually beat him by 80 votes to John's 49, in his own township, which was within two votes as bed as Abe himself got hit out there.

One Very Pleasing Result.

One of the most pleasing individual results of the election is the complete laying out of Windy Billy Mason, of Ohioago, at present the discredited and disowned Republican senator, from Illinois. He is another of those treacherous and ungrateful snipes who, having been honored and favored by their party far beyond their deserts, turn against and try to defeat it as soon as they can no longer have everything they want, and have everything run in their interest. Mason, finding that the Republicans of the state had no further use for him, has been making a tremenduous effort to defeat the oounty and legislative Republican, candidates in Ohioago; his hope being, if the effort suoeeded, to get such a claim on the Democrats that they would help boost him back into the Senate. His efforts there evidently had the contrary effect from what he expected they would, as such treachery usually does, and every Republican he was fighting was elected; and the Democrats are now cussing him as hard as the Republicans, and he has no friends any where. Which is the natural and proper result of treachery and ingratitude wherever you find them.
