The Township Trustees’ Convention.
In accordance with arrangements made at the township trustees state meeting, last winter, a convention of the trustees of the 10th congressional district was held here Wednesday and Thursday. 1 Three sessions were held, two on Wednesday and one on Thursday. : The attendance was not large but was well representative of the dis- 1 triut. 1 County Superintendent Hamil- ’ ton gave the welcoming address and also spoke on the subject “Needed Legislation.” Trusted John Ryan, of Gillam Tp., spake en "Relation of Trustees and Advisory Boards. H. R. Miller, of LaPorte, on "Relation of Trustee and Teacher,” and F. M. Pierce, of Lake Co., “Schools and Care of School Property.” All these subjects were also generally discussed, and also the following additional subjects. “The Transfer Law.” "Relation of Trustee to Poor.” “Ditches and Their Repair.” “Hedgesand Other Fences” and “Bridges.” Resolutions were adopted in favor of the following propositions: The sale of text books direct from publishers to dealers. The discontinuance of pay to teachers for attending county institute. [Pay for township institutes to continue.] That trustees be allowed to hire beginning teachers at $2 per day, regardless of grades. Favoring the present system of electing county superintendents. Favor giving trustees charge of the poor fund and care of poor the same as other funds. The raising of the additional road fund tax to 15 cents. Jones, Porter County. H. C. Corbin, Elmer Skinner, Newton Co. T. F. Maloney, 8. D. Clark, W. T. Smith, A. J. Bellows, 0. M. Blue, Jos. Stewart, John Ryan, Jasper Co. E. M. Chaplin, of the city board Warsaw. O. M. Blue was chairman and F. M. Pierce secretary.
