Dr. Brose 8. Horne, who created a sensation some time ago by filing a number of unjustifiable charges against the management of the state pHson at Michigan City and who has recently nominated by the democrats of Grant county as a representative, has withdrawn from the ticket. Bishop Alerding, of the Fort Wayne diooeoe, started Saturday on his semi, annual tour of the Catholic churches in the diooeoe for the purpose of administering confirmation. He dedicated a church at Whiting Sunday and will dedicate another at Woodland, Oct, sth.
The Marion Leader publishes a story regarding the sale of the Ben Wallace circus to Marion capitalists for >125,000. The paper states that Mr. Wallace will retain an interest in the show, but wishes to travel in Europe for his health and then settle down to a quiet life on his fine farm near Peru. Louis Russell, the negro, who was scheduled to hang at the Michigan City prison on August 9. but who was given a stay of execution by Governor Durbin, will be executed next Friday morning providing the state’s executive does not grant a further stay of execution or commute the sentence to life imprisonment. As yet the governor has not intimated what action he will take in the matter. A report is in circulation that Elias Brockus, formerly of Fair Oaks, and son of a respected resident, of that town, is in a bad fix in Dakota. The report being that he had sent back to his friends asking for >SOO, stating that an attorney had said he could clear him for that sum. Brockus appears always to have been a violent and dangerous man, as he was in jail here for quite a while, back in 8. E. Yeoman’s time as sheriff, for bady cutting a man with a knife. Remington Press: The action of the Town Board in granting a franchise and free right of way through the town to Robert Parker as agent with power to assign same to any responsible corporation that may wish to build an electric line of road through our town, was in the best interests of the town, and we trust such a line through the fertile regions of Benton county connecting u&with the Monon at Rensselaer, and passing by Fountain Park may be the result as we have reason to expect it will be at no distant day.
