A strange proclamation haa been issued by Henry Watterson, in whioh be declares' that he will not be a candidate for governor of Kentucky. Explaining why, he says: ’*Although 1 never have bad a machine, I am not a stranger either to the character or the efficiency of machine methods. Nor do I lack some points of vantage in case I wanted to construct a machine for my own purpose, but no unclean dollar has ever passed my hand, either coming or going, and 1 am too old to turn rascal. Sometimes I have declared that I should like the people to write ‘Governor of Kentucky’ on my tombstone; but I should ill rest in my grave if there were the suspicion of stain upon a letter of that honorable epitaph.” And this in Kentucky—a state absolutely under the domination of Henry Watterson’s party of purity and popular rights; that party that is at constant warfare with plutocracy and corruption. And yet, if Henry Watterson would become governor of Kentucky he must, in his old age, “turn rascal” to secure the Democratic nomination; he must scrape up familiarity with “unclean dollars;” he must fight a machine which makes impossible the expression of popular opinion!

Talk of Discontinuing Route. Talk is heard among residents along mail route No 2 at Remington that there is some likihood of the route established last spring being discontinued, but on what grounds or from what authority the rumor gained currency is unknown. The reason assigned as the cause for the probable discontinuance of the route is that so many residents along the route who have failed to provide boxen and while entitled to have not accepted the advantages offered in the establishment of the route.
