Wise Words From Benton County.

Fowler Republican: Hanley of Rensselaer is running for Judge over in the 30th Judicial Circuit and by every means should be elected. Some time ago there was a convention called at Brook in Newton county to select a candidate for Judge. The call was issued by Chairman Little of Newton county and the Chairman of Jasper county. Jasper county concluded to select her delegates at her county convention. Some of the., papers in Newton county claim this was boss rule, machine work. We can see nothing in this contention, Mr. Hanley was probably as much entitled to the Jasper delegates as Mr Cummings, the candidate from Newton county. Mr. Hanley is just as good a lawyer as Cummings, and any one who knows the two men knows that. What was the matter was plainly this. Cummings saw there was no show for him in Jasper as Hanley would get the delegates Cummings and friends then raised the howl of “ring” and Cummings’ partner in law, Mr. Darroch, was placed on the ticket. A smooth deal and well planned, bnt the Republicans of Newton county will not be fooled by it. In the north end of Newton county Hanley’s strength is on the increase and not only Republicans, but many Democrats will vote for him. We cannot see how Kitt and Strohm, who are both good come out squarely for Darroch. Hanley, after all the abuse hurled at his head, is a clean, studious, bright young lawyer and would make a good Judge. Republicans should not be wheedled by a slick scheme into the farce of voting for a lifelong Democrat like Darroch.
