AFTER BYRON—A LONG WAYS; There was a sound of revelry both day and night. And Jasper’s Capital had gathered there Great swarms of pretty girls and boys all right; And older folks in shoals were everywhere. At every turn confetti throwers stand And thrust their stuff in handfuls down your neck. And if you don’t look pleased and smile right bland, Next time they’ll soak you with at least a peck. All up and down the streets the "barkers” shout, Beat on brass gongs, and roar through megaphones. Here swifty turns the whirl-i-gig about, There high the Ferris wheel revolves in airy zones. Here handsome girl winds snakes around her tight. There Lunette drifts about in empty air. And yonder, Maid Mozalle spreads wide her garments light Or whirls them wild in serpent dancing rare. From Cairo’s tent strange Moslem voices come, In marriage rites and songs and oddest prayer! In India’s streets, close by, queer tumblers tumb, And daring Johnson dives from dizzy heights in air. In middle street the Lilliputians slug Each others’ jaws in fierce but mimic fight, And further round, the panther’s snarling mug And lion’s noble mane appear in sight. Far down the street the glass blowers ply their art And deftly make strange things from brittle glass. And farther down the fiddlers do their part Where, tireless, dances lad with lovely lass. "Be-shrew me!” then, and also, Gosh! tis great! And greater grows as day by day goes past. But soon they’ll strike their tents and pull their freight. For joys like ours are far too to last.
