Bad Wreck at Hegewisch.
The Monon had a rather serious wreck at Hegewisoh, not far north of Hammond, at one o’olook Sunday morning. An excursion train consisting of seven coaches filled with exonrsionists from Cinoinati who were returning home after a week’s pleasure trip to Chicago and Grand Haven, Mich., crashed into the rear of a long freight standing by one of the switch towers at Hegewisoh, and as a result one man, George W, Farris of Maywood. 111., was killed and four persons seriously injured. The train was in charge of Engineer Kline of the Monon, who being blinded by the flasjb of switch engine, mistook the green lights on the oaboose of tbe freight for the otear track signal and orashed into the freight at fall speed. Kline stnok to his post and used every effort to stop' the train after he saw his error, bat was unable to do it. He received a very badly orashed foot and was later taken to his home at Indianapolis by a special train. Lewis his fireman, also received severe injuries end was also taken to his home at Indianapolis. George and Daniel Farris were asleep in the oaboose of the freight when the collision oooured; George was killed and Daniel very severely injured. They were on their way to their eld home at Cave City Ky„ and for the novelty of the affair got permission to make the trip with a freight crew.
