Death on Mortgages.
The Hamilton County Ledger describes conditions prevalent in nearly every county in Indiana when it says: The annual report of Recorder Carroll published in this issue makes a good showing for the prosperity of the farmers Hamilton county. It shows that during the past year while only 332 mortgages were made on farms, that 592 were released, a reduction in number of 260; and that the amount of mortgages recorded amounted to 8320,288, while those released amounted to 8477.848, a reduction in indebtedness of 8157,560. The large number of mortgages released indicates that it was the small debtors that were paying off their incumbrances. Had it not been for the storm of Wednesday that played such havoc with crops, the coming year would have shown a better record than past. If every county in Indiana would make such a record of debt paying as Hamilton it would clear the farms of the state of nearly 815,000,000. No wonder money is plenty and rates of interest low.
