Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 34, Number 90, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 11 July 1902 — South Barkley Gravel Road. [ARTICLE]
South Barkley Gravel Road.
J. C. Thrawls and John R. Wilson the viewers and H. L. Gamble, engineer of South Barkley gravel road made a favorable report and tbe commissioners ordered the road constructed. As before stated, the, road is some over seven miles long, and will practically complete gravel road connections . from Rensselaer to Francesville. The roadway is to be 50 feet wide, and 26 feet are to be graded. One side of the grade will be the graveled pike, 10 feet wide, and on the other side a dirt road. The gravel is to be J.lj inches thick, on the average. Provision is made for using crushed rock where convenient, there being large quantities of boulders close by the road in some parts thereof. Where crushed rock is used it is to be 7 inches thick with 5 inches of gravel on top. At the east end of tbe road there is much good gravel in the same pit Gillam gravel road used, and near the west end it is thought there are several large deposits of good gravel, south of Wm. W, Murray’s residence. Tbe viewers estimated tbe cost of graveling at >2,363 per mile and tbe cost of the grading at $3,454 for the whole road. It is believed however, that the contracts can be let much lower than these figures. J. C. Thrawls, Ed. T. Biggs and Geo F. Meyers are appointed 2nd viewers to assess tbe land for the cost of tbe road, and directed to report on or before tbe August sessions of the commissioners when it is expected that notice will be given and the contracts let, as soon thereafter as passible.
