A Hold Back Party.
For over forty years the Democratic party has been simply a party of negations. It has not attempted to lead in any great undertaking but has on the contrary lain back declaring at every turn. ,4 You can’t do it!” ‘ Yon can’t do it!” while the Republican party has pieesed forward and accomplished all it set out to do. The civil-war began soon after the Republicans' took charge of the government Democrats said the revolt oould not be suppressed A large and influential section of that party joined with the Republicans and said the “Union must and shall be preserved!” The result is history. The money ques-
tion (hen came to the front, a large division of the Demooraoy declaring the “Green backs” would never be paid and that their issue was unconstitutional. They also protested against the payment of the national debt incurred by the putting down of the rebellion .and contenied for repudiation. President Johnson favored this idea of settliog the controversy. Republicans said 4be great debt, amounting to nearly three billions of dollars, was a sacred obligation and that every dollur' of it should be paid. The - resumption act was passed in 1875. Democrats fighting it at every'stage. They said you can’t resume in 1879. It was done. In all other j financial operations the sides the Republicans espoused were opposed by
the Demooraoy- In all cases the Republicans won and Democracy lost and still the fight goes on. Whatever the Republicans will contend for two years benoe this same old ‘‘hold back” fossil organization oan be oounted on to oppose and the result oan easily be anticipated. ' _ The Republican party has been the maeterly, all oonquering and persevering force of this government and has accomplished more for humanity dusing its life time than all other parties put together, and still its work is not oomplete.
