HERE AND THERE ITEMS.
Fred Gilman, of Goodland, has just received a fine automobile, ttoe first one to be owned- itr this vicinity. The Press states that the one some Remington parties were said to have ordered some time ago, *bas not been seen there yet. The baccalaureate sermon to the Rensselaer high school class of 1902 will be preached next Sunday June 2nd, at 2-30 p. m. by Rev. C. D. Royse, at Trinity M. E. church. The commencement exercises will be Thursday evening June sth. at the opera house. ...Under the head of “What Does the Purchase of the Monon Mean?” the New York Commercial publishes a map which includes the Cincinati, Hamilton & Dayton, 652 miles of road, making the total of the —combination 11,367 miles.—lndianapolis Journal. A*movement is on foot to organize a troop of cavalry in northern Indiana as a part of the'•lndiana National Guard. Col. Studebaker and Capt, Van Roberts, of South Bend, are back of the movement. The plans are to have a squad in South Bend, one in Mishawaka and one in Elkhart. Meation have already "Teen made of the very large class to be graduated this year from the township schools of Union Tp., namely 13 in al 1. Themost notable fact of any, Tn this connection, is that 9 of the 13 are from one school, and .probably it is far the largest class that ever graduated from a single country school in Jasper county. It is Brushwood school, and W. F, Osborne, of Rensselaer, whs the teacher. There were 60 pupils enrolled this year, which makes it far too large for a single teacher. Trustee Comer is contemplating a new two room building for this school, to be located right at Aix, a quarter mile east of the present building. The Monon has completed at its Lafayette shops what is said to be the largest combination baggage and mail car in the world. The length of the baggage room inside is 59 feet 4 inches, and in addition is the mailroom 15 feet 10 inches in length. The entire car is 75 feet 3 inches inside and 77 feet 6 inches over all. The car is painted Monon green, is lighted with Pintech gas and is mounted on heavy ( six-wheel trucks. The windows are of the regular Pullman pattern,, giving the train a particularly stylish appearance. Six more of these cars are building at the Lafayette shops, together with two mammoth cars for the special purpose of carrying theater ecenery. These cars open at the ends, and will carry of scenery made.
