Gates Professes Ignorance.

There seems to be some mystery on the reported deal for the Monon Railway. John W. Gates, who has arrived in New York from Chicago, is quoted by the New York Times as denying the reports that he and his associates have acquired control of the Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville by purchasing three million dollars’ worth of the stock in the open market and by the purchase of six million dollars’ worth of stock additional from Samuel Thomas. “Nothing to it as far as I’m concerned,” said Mr. Gates. Stock of 4 he Monon sold yesterday at 75}, witLnut dividend, on the strength of the rumor. There are those who question the consolidation of any line south of the Ohio river with a line north and who assort that any effort to do so would lead to extended litigation.— Indianapolis Journal.
