Gravel Roads For Barkley.

THE GOOD MOVEMENT IS AT LAST UNDER WAY. At last the Jong defered ment for good gravel or atone roads for Barkley township is fair* ly launched. A largely signed petition for an eight mile stretch of such road was hied in the Commissioners’ Court at the session just ended, and viewers for the same have been appointed. It is to be called the South Barkley Gravel Road. It is to start on the line between Bark'ey and Marion townships, at Groom’s bridge, 3| miles northeast of Rens selaer, and pass clear across the township, terminating at the west end of the new Gillam gravel road, on the old Francesville road. This route goes past Valma and Pleasant Grove stores and postoffices, and. past the Barkley, Christian and Methodist churches, and one of the oldest settled and best improved regions of Jasper county. When completed this road will make a continuous gravel road between Rensselaer and Francesville, except a mile or two in Marion Tp., and of course it will be up to Marion to see that this missing link is filled in by the time the Barkley part is completed John Hudson, Andrew Hicks and John R. Wdson, all of Carpenter Tp., are appointed viewers, and Hugh L. Gamble of Rensselaer, engineer. The date of beginning the survey is May sth. It is proposed to build it under the old 2 mile limit assessment law, which was thought best adapted to the situation of the township. But the movement does not end in this one proposition, as two oth r roads are contemplated, and petitions for being circulated. One is to start at the 8 tackhouse bridge, connecting there with a completed spur from the Marion north gravel road, and running east three miles to 8. R. Nichols’ place, a distance of three miles. And still cne other petition is being circulated. This third road is to start on the first road east from the Stackhouse bridge running north from this last road above mentioned, and to run north to John Shroer’s place, and then east, but the exact limits of which we have not learned. All these roads are to be built onAthe 2 mile assessment plan, and all will pass through excellent Country.
