Great Interest in Forestry.
Great interest is taken throughout the state in the work of the Indiana state board of forestry. Secretary Freman, of the board, says he has received at least 2,000 letters since June 1, when he entered upon his duties, asking for advice on timber culture. “People seem to be alive to the- necessity of doing something to preserve what valuable timber we have left and replenishing the growths that were once the glory of our state,” said he. “In early days the settlers made rail fences of blank walnut, and their barns and houses of black walnut and yellow popular. Think of it! The finest grade of black walnut now sells for $l2O per 1,000 fee*, and yellow popular for SBO per 1,000 feet. There is yet lots of the best stock in farm buildings and fences, but it is being picked up rapidly by the veneer and fine furniture companies.”
