Can’t Lose Hoopty Doodle.

Hoopty Doodle Powell got a $lO fine, from Judge Thompson, at Kentland last week, and is back in our county jail again, to serve it out. He was charged with assault with intent to kill his son, but the Judge acquitted him on that count. He is also under surety-of-the peace bonds for SIOO, which he will probably be unable to fnrnish, and will therefore be obliged to stay here the entire year on that account, and of which time he has already served two months.

The U- 8. Civil Service Commission will hold examinations at several places in each state during March and April, to secure young men and women for the government service. 9,889 persons secured positions last year through these examinations. Probably 10,000 appointments will be made this year. All appointments are for life and for most positions only a common school education is required. Salaries at appointment vary from $660 to SI2OO a year with liberal promotions afterward Politics is not considered. This affords a good opportunity for people between 16 and 45 years of age. Those desiring places of this kind can get full information about them, free, by writing to the Columbian Correspondence Colege, Washington, D. C. and askng for its Civil Service catalogue, number three.
