Gus Phillips, already far the greatest actor Jasper county ever produced, and destined to be much greater, has his picture in the Dramatic Mirror, of New York, for the curretftMiumber. Along with the picture is the following brief comment: “Augustus Phillips is pictured as Qharles Dickens’ famous hero, Sydney Carton, in the drama of The Only Way, in which extremely difficult tragic role he may be said to have achieved his most emphatic success, during the two seasons he has spent at the Park Theatre, Brooklyn, as leading man of the Spooner Stock company, in _which capacity he has become deservedly popular. Although Mr. Phillips is a young man, be has had wide experience, having played considerably over one hundred leading roles of all descriptions. His handsome appearance, youth, and excellent stage presence, combined with natural talent and intelligence and a praiseworthy ambition, make him one of the most promising leading men in stock at the present time.”
