Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 34, Number 33, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 24 December 1901 — Many Thousand Turkeys. [ARTICLE]
Many Thousand Turkeys.
Turkey raising in Jasper county has grown to be a big industry. This fact is strongly shown by the figures of turkeys handled by a single dealer in Rensselaer. B. 8. Fendig shipped the equivalent of 3 car loads or 6,000 birds for the Thanksgiving market, and 4 car loads, or 8,000 birds for Christmas. This makes 14,000 turkeys in all, besides which he disposed of a considerable number on the local market, and also made some smaller shipments. He ships all his turkeys to New York, and has paid over SSOO in freights on them this season. All these were shipped from Rensselaer except one car from Wheatfield. And besides these turkeys shipped by Mr. Fendig, our other large poultry shipper J. M. McDonald has also handled great numbers, although poor health has, to some extent, curtailed his operations this season.
