Keep Your Bowels Strong.

The tendency to hero worship is universal, and Americans have their full share of it and some more. Every great victory demands a great hero, and to whom all the credit is giveD, regardless of whether he deserves it or not. The battle at Santiago was a great victory and the people have selected Admiral Schley as the man to get the glory. And in his case, rather than believe in any possible flaws in bis title, or imperfections in his record, they have adopted the preposterous idea that there is a general conspiracy against him, which includes the whole navy department, and most of the naval officers. The fact is, Santiago was a battle without a hero, but of many heroes. Sampson was away, and the result would have been just the same if Schley had been away also. Every ship had its orders what to do in case the Spaniards came out, issued long before, by Sampson, and when they did come out, every ship closed in for action, in the place and order Sampson had assigned them. And owing to the quickness with which events moved, and the dense smoke from the black powder in the American guns, not a single order issued by Schley had any effect whatever upon the course of the battle, except those to his own ship, the Brooklyn. And there is plenty of evidence that the Brooklyn’s own brave and competent captain would have fought the ship just as efficiently without Schley as with him. He was brave in battle and commanded the Brooklyn ably, but so did ©very other ship commander in the battle. The Brooklyn and the Oregon, as the two fastest vessels, were able to do the most execution against the enemy, but neither nor both were the whole thing, by any means. The Indiana, lowa and Texas did great work, and even the little Winchester, knooked out both of the Spaniards’ torpedo boats, in short order.
